Her frizde Dakia savaşı an ve an işlenmiştir.

May 16, 2019

Tetrarchy, (the rule of four) One of the greatest problems the empire was struggling with was that of succession. The death of an emperor would most often lead to a new era of bloody civil wars. Also, the empire had become far too large for one emperor to rule effectively. And so, Emperor Diocletian came up with the Tetrarchy, The rule of four. The empire was split in half, both the west and the east would be ruled by a senior emperor. Each senior emperor would appoint a junior emperor himself who would serve under him, be his heir and rule his own district. And so, the empire would be split into four parts, each being ruled by its own emperor. Each senior emperor would hold the title of Augustus while his junior emperor would hold the title of Caesar. The Augustus of each half would marry his daughter of to the Caesar of the other half in order to secure family ties and loyalty. Upon the death or abdication of an Augustus, his Caesar would take his place as Augustus and appoint a new Caesar for himself. Rome was abandoned as operational capital of the empire and instead each quarter would have a capital of its own closer to its frontiers, so that the emperors could more quickly respond to foreign threats at their borders. The new capitals where Augusta Treverorum (modern day Trier, Germany), Mediolanum (modern day Milan, Italy), Sirimium (modern day Sremka Miltrovica, Serbia) and Nicomedia (modern day Izmit, Turkey). With this new system of government Diocletian hoped to secure a stable rule and system of succession for now and for future generations. #romanemperor #romanemperors #diocletian #tetrarchy #soldier #history #romanhistory #militaryhistory #ancienthistory #ancientrome #digitalart #digitaldrawing #cartoon #cartoonart #digitalillustration #illustration #historylover #historynerd #art #drawing #drawings

May 16, 2019

Flavia Maxima Fausta, known as only Fausta, was born in 289. She was the daughter of the Emperor Maximian with Eutropia. Born and raised in the time of Tetrarchy (when the Roman Empire was divided into four), her father proposed her hand in marriage to Co-Emperor Constantine I the Great as a way of maintaining peace in 293. Fausta and Constantine were married in 307. Maximian, however, did not give up his plans to murder Constantine for more power. He had told his plan to Fausta, who immediately informed her husband of the risks he ran. After that Maximian committed suicide or was killed in 310. As a way to reward Fausta, Constantine, who was very fond of his wife, gave her the title of Augusta in 323. The couple had six children, including three boys, Constantine II, Constantius II and Constant, that became Emperors. Constantine, however, had another son from his previous marriage, Flavius Julius Crispus, who had been declared illegitimate when he had to marry Fausta. Crispus, however, remained the Emperor's favorite son. To everyone's surprise, Crispus was executed by his own father in 326. Fausta was also murdered later that same year. Nowadays, historiography, although still can not state how, is convinced that the two deaths are linked. As Fausta was also the Emperor's favorite, the hypothesis that she and Crispus were lovers to overthrow Constantine does not make sense. The most accepted hypothesis, therefore, is that Fausta, wanting to secure the future of her children, had armed over Crispus. The boy had left the Palace, and Fausta told Constantine that it was because he had tried to rape her. Angered and wanting to defend his wife, Constantine ordered Crispus to be tried in a local court and sentenced to death. Days later, however, he discovered the truth, and, furious for not believing his son, he ordered the execution of his wife too. He even ordered Fausta's memory to be erased from Roman history, something that even her children didn’t try to reverse in their reigns.

Throwback to ca. AD 118–120 for this marble bust of the emperor Hadrian. - Hadrian had a wall built across Great Britain that separated the Roman Empire in the south from the Ancient Britons in the north. If this sounds familiar, it should. Hadrian’s Wall was George R. R. Martin’s inspiration for The Wall in his series of novels “A Song of Ice and Fire” and on the tv series “Game of Thrones” (which comes to an end this Sunday :-( ) - You can find this sculpture in Gallery 162 of the Greek and Roman Art department at The Met. . . . . . #tbt #sculpture #romanemperor #hadrian #hadrianswall #gameofthrones #asongoficeandfire #greekandromanart #romanart #art #arthistory #artist #artmuseum #metmuseum #metropolitanmuseumofart #museumlover #museumvisits #newyork #newyorkcity #newyorkmuseum #nyc #nycart

Durante el siglo III, en el Imperio hubo una crisis en la que emperadores eran depuestos (tenían una media de 2 años de reinado). En el 284 Diocleciano fue nombrado emperador y para mantener la estabilidad nombró otros tres emperadores. May 14, 2019

36. Emperor Diocletian, reign: 284 AD – 305 AD (21 years) Born and raised amidst the crisis of the third century, Diocletian was of low birth from the province of Dalmatia. During the decades of civil war and foreign invasions Diocletian rose through the military ranks to eventually command the elite cavalry force of Emperor Carus. Upon the death of the emperor and his son, the generals and tribunes of the eastern legions held a counsel who should lead them from now on. With an overwhelming majority the army chose Diocletian. After quickly taking care of his rival emperor Numerian, Diocletian was left with the impossible task of ending the crisis that had for the past five decades nearly destroyed this once great empire. Being the talented military commander he was, Diocletian secured threats on all borders, fending off against barbarian hordes and finally ending the endless war against the Sassanid empire. though Diocletian would be best known for his many ambitious reforms. Even though officially an absolute monarchy, the empire still pretended to be a republic, though now only led by a princeps (first citizen). Those days were now over. With Diocletian’s reforms the emperors would now have a more authoritarian rule and would be addressed as Dominus (lord, master). It is because of this that the era in roman history we will now enter is named the Dominate. He would instate many more reforms, economic, bureaucratic, military, administrative. But his most important reform would be the tetrarchy system of ruling, which will be discussed in a later post. Were there had once been nothing but chaos and war, Diocletian managed to bring order and peace to the empire and would finally bring an end to the destructive crisis of the third century. #romanemperor #romanemperors #diocletian #tetrarchy #barracksemperor #soldier #history #romanhistory #militaryhistory #ancienthistory #ancientrome #digitalart #digitaldrawing #cartoon #cartoonart #digitalillustration #illustration #historylover #historynerd #art #drawing #drawings

May 14, 2019

Day 9 work in progress .... pencil drawing of Roman Emperor Trajan after the statue in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen, Denmark. 65cm x 50cm, 2019. The statue is of white marble with yellowish patina, total height 200 cm (the ancient part is 150 cm). Purchased by the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in 1897 (inv. 1584). Trajanic age (after 107 AD). The origin could be hypothesized from the surroundings of Castel Gandolfo and therefore from the imperial Villa of Domitian. Trajan (Latin: Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus Divi Nervae filius Augustus) 18 September 53 – 8 August 117. Roman emperor from 98 to 117. Officially declared by the Senate optimus princeps ("the best ruler"), Trajan is remembered as a successful soldier-emperor who presided over the greatest military expansion in Roman history, leading the empire to attain its maximum territorial extent by the time of his death. He is also known for his philanthropic rule, overseeing extensive public building programs and implementing social welfare policies, which earned him his enduring reputation as the second of the Five Good Emperors who presided over an era of peace and prosperity in the Mediterranean world. This #museummonday: Titus Flavius Vespasianus was 9th Emperor of the Roman empire, last from the 4-emperors-year and founder of the Flavian dynasty. He born on November 17th 9 AD and he governed from July 1st 69 AD to June 23rd 79 AD. He started his military and political career in 26 AD and partecipated in the reconquest of Britain and in the Jewish war; in 69 AD his legions elected him Emperor and killed the predecessor Aulus Vitellius Germanicus Augustus; the 69 AD was a year of crisis and it's called by scholars "The year of the four emperors" (Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespasianus), Galba was elected by his legions and killed by Otho legions who became emperor but he committed suicide and because he didn't want to be killed by his enemies in the senate, after him the senate elected Vitellius who was killed by Vespasian troops. Vespasianus started the Flavian dynasty (Flavius in latin means blonde), after Vespasianus succeeded his son Titus and after Titus Domitian, who adopted an old man called Marcus Cocceius Nerva, and from here started the adoptive dynasty. Vespasianus was famous for the great quantity of public bathroom, and for this reason the name Vespasianus is synonym of toilet in the Italian language. #vespasian #emperor #emperors #rome #romanstatue #romanstatues #italy #italia #naples #napoli #romanempire #romanemperor #romanemperors #romanempire👑 #museum #archeology #history #ancienthistory #ancientrome #ancientart #statues #statue #art #museoarcheologicodinapoli #vespasianus #empire #toilet #roma #likeforlikes
