Jul 18, 2019

Our new episode is here! When Cleopatra met Julius Caesar, sparks flew. The daring Egyptian queen beguiled the conquering Roman general—and then enlisted him to fight her battles. Outnumbered five to one in a city full of ancient wonders, Cleopatra and Caesar spent the next ten months barricaded in a luxurious palace while outside, the enemy howled for their blood--fighting a deadly urban war for Cleopatra's throne and both of their survival. http://bit.ly/2Lk6pWV #Cleopatra #queen #ancientegypt #egypt #Alexandria #ancientegypt #cleopatravii #ancientrome #research #history #ancienthistory #research #badass #romanemperor #romanempire #juliuscaesar #fangirl #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #podcasting #anicenthistory #history #militaryhistory

Jul 17, 2019

Researchers have managed to date back the history of Syedra to the 7th century BC. There was a continuity of the settlement in the area until the 13th century AD. Syedra experienced the period of its greatest prosperity in the 2nd century AD, when the city walls were erected, defining an extensive area on the top of the hill. It is estimated that at that time Syedra's population reached 4500 inhabitants. Later, the city declined and the fortifications were rebuilt in order to better protect its smaller area. Syedra first appeared in historical records in the first century BC. The most memorable moment of the city's history was in 194 AD when a letter of commendation from Roman Emperor Septimius Severus arrived to the city. The Emperor praised the courage of Syedra inhabitants who bravely fought off numerous pirate attacks. In order to commemorate this event the contents of this letter were engraved in stone. Among the most important buildings that have been preserved, in better or worse condition, in Syedra are impressive baths, a gymnasium, a colonnaded street, five water cisterns, an ancient temple, a Byzantine church and an olive-oil workshop. #travelphotography #travel #lovetotravel #historicalplaces #history #antiquecity #romanemperor #byzantine #city #antientcity

Jul 16, 2019

#digitalpainting #pinturadigital #digitalarte #digitalart #creepyartwork #worm #darkart #romanemperor #gusanos #imperioromano #classicalart #arteclasico #disgusting #caligula

Jul 16, 2019

The Chi Rho  also known as chrismon or sigla is one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (ΧΡ)—of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ(Christos) in such a way that the vertical stroke of the rho intersects the center of the chi. The Chi-Rho symbol was used by the Roman emperor  Constantine I (r. 306–337) as part of a military standard (vexillum). Constantine's standard was known as the Labarum. Early symbols similar to the Chi Rho were the Staurogram and the IX monogram. In pre-Christian times, the Chi-Rho symbol was also to mark a particularly valuable or relevant passage in the margin of a page, abbreviating  chrēston (good). Some coins of Ptolemy III Euergetes (r. 246–222 BC) were marked with a Chi-Rho. Although formed of Greek characters, the device (or its separate parts) is frequently found serving as an abbreviation in Latin text, with endings added appropriate to a Latin noun, thus XPo, signifying Christo, "to Christ", the dative form of Christus #chirho #chrismon #sigla #dative #christogram #christos #chi #romanemperor #constantine #militarystandard #christus #christ #christo #chreston #good #labarum #staurogramm

The turn of the 7️⃣th century AD Cathedral ⛪ of Saint Domnius - it is regarded as the oldest Catholic Cathedral ⛪ in the world 🌍 in use in its original structure and one of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings 🏛still standing.. (though the 🔔 Bell Tower dates from the 1️⃣2️⃣th century) . It was built as a mausoleum for Roman Emperor Diocletian, the last famous persecutor of the Christians, who was interred here in AD 3️⃣1️⃣1️⃣.. In the 5️⃣th century the Christians got the last laugh, destroying the Emperor's sarcophagus and converting his tomb into a church ⛪ dedicated to one of his victims.. . . . . . . . #croatia #visitcroatia #split #ancient #ancientruins #building #oldbuilding #oldwalls #beautifulbuildings #roman #romanempire #romanemperor #diocletianspalace #christianity #holy #cathedral #oldchurch #mausoleum #architecture #architecturephotography #archidaily #churcharchitecture #history #historyfacts #historylovers #facade #facadelovers #tower #belltower #travelgram

Statues of the baroque Rijksmuseum gardens. Busts of unknown Roman Emperors and seasons. Spring (Lente) is portrayed as Flora surrounded by flowers. Summer (Zomer) is thought to have originally been carrying a sheaf of corn in her left arm, the attribute of Ceres, goddess of agriculture. The seasons were made by Ignatius van Logteren (1685-1732) in Bentheim sandstone. Only Spring, Summer and Autumn have survived. Jul 12, 2019

Emperor Caracalla (212–217 AD). This staggeringly powerful marble bust is in the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. I used to visit it often when I lived in the city between 2004-5. What a masterpiece of portraiture it is! - Caracalla became known for the construction of the Baths of Caracalla, which became the second-largest baths in Rome and for the introduction of a new Roman currency named the antoninianus, a sort of double denarius. In 216, Caracalla began a campaign against the Parthian Empire. He did not see this campaign through to completion due to his assassination by a disaffected soldier in 217. Macrinus succeeded him as emperor three days later. In the 18th century, the works of French painters revived images of Caracalla due to apparent parallels between Caracalla's tyranny and that ascribed to Louis XVI of France (r. 1774–1792). Modern works continue to portray Caracalla as a psychopathic and evil ruler, painting him as one of the most tyrannical of all Roman emperors. It’s recorded by Dio that when Caracalla was a boy he had a tendency to show an angry or even savage facial expression... which is obviously something that continued throughout his life :-)

•GAIUS JULIUS CAESAR• #onthisday born 12 or 13 July 100BC. Left: Pencil drawing of a posthumous portrait marble bust of Julius Caesar, 44 - 30 BC, now in the Museo Pio Clementino, Galleria dei busti, inv. 713, Vatican Museums. 40cm x 30cm, 2019. Right: A pencil drawing of the statue of the Julius Caesar. Statue made by the French sculptor Nicolas Coustou (1658 - 1733). It was commissioned in 1696 for the Gardens of Versailles now in the Louvre Museum. Height 2.42m. 55cm x 38cm, 2012. Gaius Julius Caesar (12 or 13 July 100 BC – 15 March 44 BC) known by his nomen and cognomen Julius Caesar, was a Roman politician, military general, and historian who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar is seen as the main example of Caesarism, a form of political rule led by a charismatic strongman whose rule is based upon a cult of personality, whose rationale is the need to rule by force, establishing a violent social order, and being a regime involving prominence of the military in the government. #blackwhite #blackandwhite #artistsoninstagram #artwork #art #artist #greece #rome #history #ancientgreece #fabercastell #juliuscaesar #artshow #artgallery #newartwork #fineart #myart #artnews #arte #picoftheday #spartan #warrior #rome #ancientrome #romanemperor #spqr #sparta #spartans
