Three of the five ‘words’ that encapsulate a meaningful life for me are CONNECTION, ADVENTURE and JOY. I was lucky to get these 3 on our mini escape to the city last weekend. I said see ya later to the housework and we opted instead to be tourists in our own city. It was so great just to be present with our kids and watch them delight in some new experiences. ⁣⁣ I’ve done you all a disservice lately 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ve led you astray, I’ve misspoke, and now it’s time to correct it.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Recently we’ve started a discussion around emotions with an emphasis on the regulation of them. I chose to call this topic “emotional control” and recently switched this problematic dialogue to “emotional management” instead. This small switch may seem silly, but the thing is, control is a tricky and loaded word. Control implies the ability to exercise restraint or direction over, to make a choice, to be dominant over, and that’s just not how emotions work. As humans, we have a wide range of intense emotions we experience that we often don’t have control over (nor should we!). Emotions aren’t meant to be controlled, they’re meant to be felt. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This small switch may seem like a technicality, but our words have power. What you say has an outstanding affect on both yourself and those around you. How we chose our words is important, and for that reason you will no longer hear me coaching on “emotional control”, because that’s the last thing I want for you. I don’t want you to feel the need to control your natural emotions, but instead, have the ability to properly regulate them (IN A HELTHY CAPACITY 😉) have the correct understanding of what they mean, and for you to be comfortable and feel safe in your capacity to process them effectively. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Our words have power, and I’ll be choosing mine a little more carefully from now on. 💞

Have you gone down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out what is wrong with you? 🤔 . I know I have. Reading research articles, blogs written by health experts, watching youtube videos, taking online courses... trying to problem solve. 🤯 . But in recent years, what I have observed and come to realize is that by solely focusing on what is wrong with you, even worse merging your identity with a diagnosis can potentially delay the healing process. Because quite simply what you put your mind to becomes your reality. Awareness and obsession is a two separate thing. The former emerges from open mind and curiosity, the latter out of fear and control. 😱 . Let’s look at it this way. Your goal is to get well. But all that you think about on a day to day basis is how it sucks to be sick, meeting doctors who tell you what’s wrong with you, taking supplements because you don’t want to be sick. You’re still living in the headspace of negativity and fear. And you scratch your head thinking “why am I not getting any better?” This can keep you stuck for many years. I know. I’ve been there. 🤦🏻‍♀️ . This was an aha moment for me. Made me re-think about my role as a doctor and change how I communicate with my patients and myself. 👩🏻‍⚕️ . The fastest way to getting well is looking forward to becoming well, visualizing your healthy, vibrant self while lovingly tending to your body. If you need a strategy to get from point A to B then seek help. It is when we’re trying to do too many things on our own, we get distracted from our primary goal. 🌈 . Deep breaths. You absolutely got this!✨💗

Been studying resiliency for my dissertation and it is such a fascinating topic. Why do some people stay strong during adversity while others have difficulty coping. Karaırmak and Figley (2017) studied resilience in social work students. The authors point out that there are differing schools of thought on resilience. Some scholars believe that resilience is a personality trait, while other scholars believe that it is a coping mechanism induced by adverse life events. There are studies to support both ideas, so studying this concept further is important. The authors measured social work students on measures of resilience, adverse life events and affect at two times during the semester. By giving the measures twice, the authors could see if resiliency changed over time or if it stayed the same. There was a slight increase in resilience scores during adverse times, but on the whole resiliency trended on staying about the same for individuals at different times of taking the measure, thus supporting the theory that resilience is a trait rather than a coping style. Letter boards are great 😍but what no one tells you is that you will have the same message on there for six months because it’s a lot of work to take all those letters off and add new ones 😂⁣ ⁣ Plus if you have kids and do it in front of them they want to “help” which then makes it take so much longer. 🙃⁣ ⁣ So then when you add a new message you feel such a sense of accomplishment. 🙌🏾⁣ ⁣ Heres my new message that I will keep in front of myself and let’s hope it doesn’t take me six months to add another positive message to my board 🤣🤗

We’re all born with the capability to be and act like that - meaning we have the potential inside of us. . We just may have lost our connection to it, don’t  know how to access it, or don’t feel like we’re capable of doing so. . Learning to act and handle conflict from the Superhero Core requires a connection with your Physicality, your Psychology, your Principles and your Purpose, even if it feels like a weak connection to start with. . Physical Stamina, Strength and Speed are skills. . “Nerves of Steel” and “Grace under Fire” are skills. . Showing up with an authentic, generous and courageous heart is a skill. . Seeking connection to something bigger than yourself is a skill. . Acting from a place of service, that’s also a skill. . People may not know that these are SKILLS. . Like most parents of school aged children who have lots of after school activities, time is precious! Being winter & it’s dark after 5, I have to create habits around morning exercise or I run out of time. It’s not perfect. I’ve fallen off the exercise wagon more times than I can count. The all or nothing hasn’t worked for me over & over. So it’s time to change the focus & the strategy. I’ve now reframed it to being active. Bailey needs a walk & so do I. We have a big trip coming up in a few months and there will be lots of hiking. I need to build fitness, flexibility, agility & strength. I’m not going to be silly & try to achieve this in 2 weeks. I’m looking at small incremental changes that will build a life long habit. The 3 month fitness goal is just the first step. Day 2 ✅. #healthgoal #strategy #goalsetting #coach #positivepsychology

I just wanted talk about something that is really close to home for me. Hola if if effects you. * It is our propensity to take on guilt, responsibility and accountability when it is not our place to so. Sometimes this can be thrust onto us by others, but more often than not we simply create and take it on ourself. * Lemme give you an example. * Have you ever got looked at a chore, like load of washing, a giant pile that seems to loom over you, and thought, "I'll do that later." Only, an hour later you walk into the lounge room to see your partner doing it. * A reasonable response might be one of gratitude and relief. * But.... If you're anything like me, you immediately feel guilty. Before you know it, you're saying, "I'm sorry, I was going to do that." You feel so bad that you didn't just do it when you had the chance, and imagine yourself a burden, inadequate and unworthy. * And then.... Right on the heels of this is an immediate defensiveness. You might not voice it, but this little voice in the back of your head suddenly rears its ugly head: * 'I do plenty of work around the house. They should be folding that washing. Why do I have to do everything etc etc etc'. * That little defensive voice is your coat of armour, and adds no real value. * The real issue here, is why did you feel guilt in the first place? You didn't hold a gun to your partner's head to do it. Better then that, it's a partnership! There are going to be times when you pick up the work, and times when they will. * If you're the kind of person who takes on guilt a lot, then know there is something in your past that has conditioned you to do this, and you don't have to be the guilt sponge soaking up responsibility and accountability for everything. This isn't about casting blame (which is equally unhelpful). Rather, it's about stopping the blame game altogether by not becoming immersed in guilt and fear. * Do some digging. Think about times in your life when you KNOW you didn't need to be immersed in guilt, but somehow you were. Think of the earliest memory you have, and think about the most painful ones. * Then do yourself a favour - write them down. Do 15 minutes of writing ⬇️⬇️⬇️

When she found out she was pregnant in her junior year, that made her work 10 times harder and scholarships kept piling up "At the end of junior year I had $200,000. Lets PLAY!! When we are kids, running and jumping and swinging is considered play… at some point in our transition into adulthood, that type of activity gets translated into “working out”. The name change alone seems to change the way that we look at physical activity. Lets be honest… riding bikes and jumping on trampolines and skating around the neighborhood and building treehouses was always hard work… We just called it “play”. We ran and jumped and created because we could! Play gave us new ways to experience the world. It gave us opportunities to be creative, and problem solve, and experience the pure joy of movement! I remember climbing trees with my friends and pretending every bough was another “floor” or “level” in our spaceship. I wasn’t worried about getting dirty or counting how many calories I was burning. Amy Wrzesniewski's research looks into how people view their work. Her findings indicate that those who see their work as a calling have more meaning in their work. She also found that in any given profession, be it cleaning or surgery, around 1/3 of people see their work as a job, 1/3 see it as a career and 1/3 see it as a calling. Interestingly, just as many cleaners as surgeons view their work as a calling. Perhaps it's not about the role, but more about the mindset of the individual doing the role? As someone recovering from severe depression and mental illness, I’ve lived this to an extreme level. Some recent events in life caused me to fall back into old mindsets and it threw me for a loop because I had been doing so well. Then I remembered it’s ok.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Some days we need more discipline, some days we need more tenderness. Some days my best is getting up at 3:30 am, involves a 5 minute yoga headstand, tai-chi, meditation and swimming 20 laps before going for a walk, other days it’s sleeping in till 6am having an indulgent coffee from Dunkin and playing video games. When you can’t stop thinking about something. ⁣ ⁣ Can’t get out of your head? ⁣ ⁣ Try this SUPER helpful technique 💁🏼‍♀️: ⁣ ⁣ Imagine that you have been abducted by aliens (stay with me, I’m going somewhere sane, I promise), and your life depends on your ability to express all the depth of your feelings and thoughts to your captors. The only caveat - aliens don’t speak human. So you are not allowed to use words. You can dance it, you can draw it, paint it, play it, play-dough it,… anything non-verbal is game (you can make gibberish and animal sounds though). ⁣ ⁣ This works on many levels. From psychology angle the effect is through activating your emotional brain. Here’s a bit of science behind it: we process everything in our minds in 2 distinct parallel processes - rational and emotional. Thinking about some shitty thing that happened to you (or CAN happen to you) puts your rational system in overdrive. You get totally stuck there. The THING seems so terrifying or burdensome or troubling that your smart smart rational brain wants to protect your emotional self and takes all the burden onto itself. And so the poor sucker keeps thinking of strategies to save you. Like searching for reasons why you were right and your partner was wrong or prepare you for a possible failure in the new project by playing all the worse case scenarios. ⁣ Help the brainy brother out. Engage your emotional processing too. As you express your conundrum, you are actually working through it, but from a different angle. ⁣Your rational brain is now resting (and so are you as it’s no longer firing the crazy hormonal alarm potions into your body). And your timid emotional brain is learning that this world is not all that scary after all. ⁣ What you express doesn’t have to be beautiful, it doesn’t need to be seen and approved by anyone. Just let it move through you. Put on some music that suits your mood and dance it out. Grab some paper and colours that match your feelings and draw.. ⁣ ⁣ If you don’t have a favourite expression method - try them all. ⁣ ⁣ And who knows, maybe this may turn out to be a legit alien communication training. ⁣ #Wake_Feelings#Wake_Practice
