I remember taking my first yoga class 8 years ago in Nashville. I couldn’t even make it through the opening sequences without having to lay down. Yoga has helped me in so many ways. I have been able to open up emotionally and the practice has helped me physically build strength and flexibility. This practice is a true mind body experience and unique to each individual. The parkway was closed for a while during the pandemic, and I was so looking forward to it reopening! This is something I have always enjoyed, but I felt a special gratitude today. My nephew and I had to cancel our 5-day planned journey after one day’s hike, sleep and then waking up to wet/frozen packs and insufficient dry materials. Lessons learned! 🏕🏔🌲 . . Internal dialogue is always about the truth that the ego is not comfortable with. . The trick is to observe the internal dialogue and not let the conscious mind get entangled in its web. . Internal dialogue must not be ignored. It should be acknowledged and then put to rest. . In initial stages of meditation 🧘‍♀️ the internal dialogue can take you far away from the cushion and this is natural. . Slowly and surely you can entangle the web of thoughts and put it to rest and then get back to your breath or your bodily sensations as the anchor in the turbulent ocean of internal dialogue. . Not to mention the hesitancy to go to a gym or some other public place to exercise. # Are you wondering if you have body image issues? We've been 'RELEASING' what no longer serves us and it feels wonderful to let go! Whilst moving all the furniture out to have new carpet replaced last week, it's been an opportunity for my husband and I to discard and shed old baggage. In boxes, tubs and plain sight we've kept things from previous lives full of sentimentality, old memories, and dust. So many 'things' and so much 'stuff' forgotten about for years... not merely because some have been packed away out of view, because many are visual - we've simply stopped noticing them! #covid has been an opportunity and invitation to REVIEW our choices. It's a chance to REDEFINE and RESET how we align and live our lives. Having worked from home for nearly a decade, the day-to-day attention within my work has not actually needed to change. I designed a business model that suited my ability to work from anywhere and step back when I need to. What we HAVE changed is our #FOCUS. There is no value in holding onto the past through objects and things. This has ignited a real desire to SHIFT and continue to deliberately focus on creating a new way for us to live, love and help others. It feels good. Really good. #throwbackthursday to Miami summer nights 💕 I always find it crazy how much life can change from year to year. This time last year, I was in the midst of planning my Miami girl’s trip vacation! This time two years ago, I was interning at the State Lab while finishing up my Master’s. And the year before that, I had just graduated undergrad. Now, I am working full time in the lab (in the midst of a global pandemic), wedding planning (made so much progress this week with booking our vendors!!!) and pursuing a passion with a side business in safer beauty products ( beautycounter ) This time next year, I’ll be 1 week away from marrying suraj.patel2014 🥰 Time creeps up on you, but one thing I’ve learned over the last few months is to slow down, step back and enjoy the process! ✨

When I first got interested in wellness, I approached a healthy lifestyle the way I approached everything in my life: with a detailed to-do list, a 3 month plan, and a lengthy reading list. I saw health as my new “goal” and this was the only way that I knew how to achieve my goals. If it worked for high school, college, and my actuarial exams.. why would it not work for here?⁣ ⁣ Long story short: It didn’t work. Not really. I did all the things. Checked off all the boxes. I thought I was healthy but I did not feel healthy. I was doing everything “right.” My clothes fit right, the number on the scale was right, according to the experts my macros were right. My mind said I was healthy but my body said otherwise. I felt tired, anxious, hungry, reactive, bloated, self-conscious, and a host of other things that did not align with my mind claimed to be true.⁣ ⁣ This is the difference between intellectualizing health, and actually EMBODYING it.⁣ ⁣ 🌱This is the difference between eating salad because you think you should, and eating fresh vegetables because you want to.⁣ 🌱This is the difference between forcing yourself to go to the gym because experts say you should, and getting in movement because your body is craving it.⁣ 🌱This is the difference between meditating to say you did it, and meditating because you have experienced how much better it makes your day.⁣ ✨This is the difference between forcing yourself to do things because someone else said so, and actually knowing what is right for you, your body and your life.⁣ ⁣ We start the journey to health through the mind. We intellectualize, we learn, we create structure, we build habits. But from there the mind must befriend the body. This means letting go of arbitrary expectations, goals, and check boxes and giving the body a seat at the table.⁣ ⁣ 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺. This form of anxiety tends to come out of the blue when your senses send a message to the amygdala that potential danger may be lurking near. ⁣ ⁣ Take for example, you are walking through a dark parking garage at night and see a person in the distance leaning up against a pillar. Their presentation looks a little sketchy and all of a sudden you are overcome with a physical sensation. ⁣ ⁣ That physical sensation is your anxiety going to work for you. Your fight-or-flight was activated to prepare you to respond just in case that creeper tried to snag you. ⁣ ⁣ Can you think of a time when you had amygdala-based anxiety? In my healing journey, I found scriptures that applied to my situation, personalized them, and then meditated on them and/or declared them out loud. 🌊This is a helpful reminder that I like to use with clients. Often times, we want to push our emotions away because they can be too overwhelming to deal with. We run from our emotions- a defense mechanism known as avoidance. This can lead to many harmful behaviors because we may engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms in order to deal with these emotions that arise. ⁣ ⁣ 🌊The next time you are experiencing a powerful or negative emotion, make a conscious effort to ride it out rather than letting it consume you. This is a mindfulness technique (commonly used in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT) that can help you recognize your emotions and feel them without judgement. Picture a wave forming out on the ocean that is headed straight for you. You could avoid this wave in many ways (diving underneath it, swimming to shore, trying to get over it before it breaks). However, we often forget that the simplest thing to do is to ride it out. • M I N D B O D Y • I am currently taking a course in somatic coaching—the power of embodiment. Ever since I did my YogaFit and Pilates training 20 years ago, I've been fascinated by the connection between our emotions, thoughts and beliefs, and how we have become physically shaped. Maybe we pitch ourselves forward, or have turned inward, or have etched a scowl on our face. The powerful news is that when we work on changing our physical shape alongside the work we do in changing our beliefs, we create LASTING change. (This is exponentially different than just trying to tell ourselves a new message.) . Try this simple exercise. Widen your stance. Rock slightly back and forth and side to side, finding the balanced position in the middle. Open your chest area and drop your shoulder blades into your back pockets. Reach your arms into the air, keeping your chest open and shoulder blades down. Add an affirming message, like "I am enough!" "Anything is possible!" "I've got this!" ♥ Do that 5 times. Say it outloud if you feel safe. . Notice how you feel now. What has shifted? What's your energy level now? 22. Every day 22 vets take their lives in this country. Does that sound right to you? Is that acceptable? We ask these men and women to risk their lives so we can enjoy our freedom. They do it. Completely voluntarily. Come home only to discover invisible injuries that turn them against themselves. ⁣ It's not acceptable to me. 22 push ups a day just doesn't cut it. Throwback to Phase 1 of #80dayobsession, when Graham always seemed to wake up for my last round of the day ☺️☺️ . . . This is one of my favorite programs to recommend!!! I was intimidated by the length of the workouts (45-60 minutes) but they always went by super fast somehow. And if I got interrupted?? I kept going with the kids up when possible, or I went back to it after they were in bed!! . . . . Laundry sometimes went unfolded and toys left out on the floors, but you know what? None of that means a thing to me now, but the fact that I stuck to my commitment and got SO much stronger means everything!!! Do you think menstrual health is too taboo to talk about? ⁣⠀ Since I’ve started speaking about menstrual health on this platform, my engagement and following have gone down tremendously. ⁣⠀ On the flip side, I’ve had so many women reach out to me and tell me they love my content, that they’re excited to learn more and even share intimate details of their cycle with me. ⁣⠀ I’m no longer sharing generic content that will appeal to everyone. Instead, I’m sharing content that may cause discomfort, but, with the aim to help women and spread helpful information. ⁣⠀ The thing that bothers me is talking about menstrual health is regarded as socially unacceptable, while the sexualization of women’s bodies is at an incredible high. ⁣⠀ If I decided to show my body instead of talking about the underlying health I would get much more social interaction because of it. ⁣⠀ **I do not judge women for showing their bodies on social channels or otherwise. Everyone has their own unique way to express themselves.** ⁣⠀ I am sharing information that we should definitely have access to. Information that should be common knowledge, but that is tiptoed around because it’s a ‘sensitive topic’. ⁣⠀ If you want to learn more about menstrual health, how it affects your life and how to improve it please like and comment.
