⁣ -------------------------------------------------------------------⁣ ⁣ #historymemes #memes #history #meme #worldhistory #romanempire #lordoftherings #lotr #tolkien #thehobbit #middleearth #jrrtolkien #hobbit #gondor #byzantium #byzantine #byzantineempire #greek #constantinople #medieval #greece #istanbul #asia #costantinopoli #medioevo #storia #greekfire #historianogre

Flavius Belisarius (500 A.D. - 565 A.D.), the Roman general who reconquered a considerable portion Western Roman Empire, which had fallen largely into the hands of Gothic and Vandal Kings. Famous for his loyalty to the ambitious but mercurial Justinian I, he showed and instilled discipline in the Roman army in an otherwise waning period of Roman military history. In two short conflicts with the Sassanid Empire, regardless of losing, Belisarius performed admirably at the battle of Dara (530 A.D.) but truly showed his skill by forcing a large Persian cavalry force intent on pillaging Syria (a wealthy Roman province at the time and largely undefended) to retreat without giving battle. This campaign would end with a Roman defeat in the pitched battle of Callinicum (Easter Sunday, 19th of April, 531 A.D. a Pyrrhic victory for the Sassanids), but the affair was such a waste of man power and simultaneously humiliating for the Sassanids, who hitherto despised the Romans as cowards but had been turned back from an anticipated simple and profitable campaign by being outmaneuvered. He would go to win greater glory in the West during the partially successful “Restoration Of The Empire.” The art is done by Mariusz Kozik, from the game Total War Attila, The Last Roman expansion pack. #history #rome #roman #romanhistory #armor #strategy #tactics #hellas #hellenes #hellenic #roma #legion #horse #helmet #sword #shield #bio #monday #byzantine #byzantineempire

BYZANTUM—the once crown jewel of the civilized world is now a mere hedonist’s playground. Her most able general and statesman, Almuric Agricola, discovers this terminal decadence is engineered by a near-omnipotent shadow group having infiltrated the corridors of power and bent on the slaughter of the citizenry before seizing the Capitol. Almuric attempts to oust this indomitable evil, yet is branded a madman and exiled by a traitorous bureaucracy to a mountain fortress in the desert. Whispers reach the Capitol that Almuric is harboring a mysterious princess of tremendous interest to the clandestine group and that he also employed the services of an infamous Varangian guardsman—a giant Northman mercenary. Like moths to the flame their forces coalesce upon his desolate fortress. Almuric and his barbarian axe-man are waiting—and the desert shall be awash with blood to determine who gets to keep the jewel that is Byzantum. 🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾⁣ 🍃⁣ TO BUY👉Link on bio⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣ #crusade #crusader #crusaders #crusadeon #crusaderpride #norsepagan #norsetattoo #scandinavia #vikingpride #medievalknight #medievalwarrior #greekmyth #greekgod #medieval_world #medievalrealm #vikingwarrior #medievalarmor #philosophyquote #amwritinghistoricalfiction #amwritingdarkfantasy #philosophyquote #crusadercastle #medievaltimesdallas #medievalphilosophy #byzantineempire #byzantinecatholic #romanarmy #booktrailer

May 24, 2020

The Byzantine Empire is called the successor of the Roman Empire in the West and so is known as the Eastern Roman Empire. Its Western counterpart fell in 476 AD while the Byzantine Empire survived for another thousand years. Its subjects, the Byzantine Greeks identified themselves as 'Rhomaioi' i.e. Romans. Many historians argue about the legitimacy of the Byzantine Empire being the continuation of the Roman Empire as the latter spoke Latin while the former conversed in Greek. . . Constantine I 'The Great' is generally considered to be the founder of the Byzantine Empire. He brought two major changes that helped create a Byzantine culture different from the Western Roman Empiret. First, he legalized and converted to Christianity, and sponsored the Christian Church. Second, he shifted the capital of the Roman Empire to the city of Byzantium, which he refounded as the city of Constantinople. Constantine’s founding of Constantinople in 330 AD is usually considered the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. By moving the capital of the empire outside Italy and to the East. Apparently, the empire became too big to rule so after Constantine, few emperors ruled the entire Roman Empire. It was too big, and under attack from too many directions. Usually, there was an emperor of the Western Roman Empire ruling from Italy or Gaul, and an emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire ruling from Constantinople. There was thus, the institution of Co-Emperorship. . . The Western Empire got overrun by Germanic barbarians and the last Western Emperor was deposed in 476 BC while the Eastern Empire thrived, and Constantinople became the largest city in the empire and a major commercial center until it fell to the Ottoman Turks after almost a thousand years in 1453. . . #byzantineempire #romanempire #roman #byzantine #history #europe #christianity #rome #italy #greek #greece #constantinople #ottoman #istanbul

May 24, 2020

. . . . . #vremeplovka #danslovenskepismenosti #ciriloimetodije #prosvetitelji #velikomoravska #solun #vizantija #vizantijskocarstvo #pismenost #jezik #glagoljica #pismo #azbuka #byzantine #byzantineempire #language #languagelearning #history

🌪 . . . . . #fortress #oldfortress #ancientfortress #beautifortress #byzantines #byzantine #byzantineempire #byzantinearchitecture #byzantinehistory #lovehistory #byzantinebuild #thracians #thracian #sohigh #abovetheclouds #ovech #ovechfortress #provadiya #bulgaria #bulgariatravel #bulgariatourism #travellingwithmylove #travellife #travelgram #sonyalpha #sonyalpha6000 #sonyalphasclub #amateurphotography #amateurphotographyskills #photographylovers

May 23, 2020

The beautiful town of Berat (present-day south Albania). The name of the city derives from the Old Bulgarian (Бѣлградъ or "Beligrad") (meaning "white city" in the South Slavic languages), under which name it was known in Greek, Bulgarian and Latin documents during the High and Late Middle Ages. The First Bulgarian Empire under Presian I captured the town in the 9th century, and the city received the name Belgrad ("White City"),(Βελέγραδα) in Greek, later changed to Berat under Ottoman rule. The town became one of the most important towns in the Bulgarian region of Kutmichevitsa and an important religious center of the Bulgarian Archbishopric of Ohrid. The Berat region was center of many Bulgarian uprisings against Byzantine rule, until they were finally defeated and the Bulgarian governors surrendered the city to the emperor Basil II in 1018, the city remained in Byzantine hands until the Second Bulgarian Empire retook it in 1203 during the rule of Kaloyan. The Berat Castle was build on early ruins dating back to 200 BC used by the Romans. The fortress acquired its final appearance during the First Bulgarian Empire. The last time the fortress was used as a fortification facility was during the Ottoman rule. Today Berat is a city-museum and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. ______________ #berat #albania #bulgarianhistory #macedonia #greece #berati #beratfortress #albaniahistory #albaniatravel #albanians #bulgarians #byzantineempire #balkans #slavs #ottomanempire #belgrade #beograd #belgrad

May 23, 2020

☧ 🔥 πῦρ ῥωμαϊκόν 🔥☧ - Greek fire was a famous weapon and crucial to the survival of the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages. It’s invention could have been by a Syrian Christian known as Kallinikos. The Byzantines also thought it was a gift from God to Constantine the Great to protect his new Christian capital. At the time it was in use, it was actually called Roman fire or sea fire. The western crusaders came up with the name Greek fire as they held dismissive, confused, and ahistorical views of the Eastern Roman Empire. This weapon was not a perfect weapon, it wasn’t a super flamethrower that could always destroy an enemy fleet. As it floated on water, if the currents or winds were not ideal it could burn your own ships. It was most suited for defending, especially in the waters around Constantinople. Constantinople could not be taken or blockaded without naval superiority, as the sea walls were the main weakness. In certain conditions Greek fire could achieve major destruction and demoralization of enemy forces as no one wanted to be vaporized by what looked like a dragon’s breath. The weapon saved the Romans during the Arab siege of 717-718, potentially the biggest and most important battle in the medieval era. Greek fire was used to re-assert Byzantine naval dominance over the Arabs in the centuries after the siege. It was also used to destroy the Viking fleets of the Rus, who tried to take an undefended Constantinople by surprise attack several times only. The formula and the technology for the siphon which projected it were state secrets. The Arabs captured ships on occasion that had Greek fire. However despite having more resources than the Romans, the Arabs couldn’t recreate the exact formula, nor could they figure out how to project it. By the Fourth Crusade, there is no mention of Greek fire, nor was it used in 1453. The formula was probably lost as the Angeloi let the Byzantine navy disintegrate, which led to disaster in 1204 as the golden horn was left exposed to attack. I wonder how history would be different if the Venetian ships were turned to ashes by Greek fire.

HISTORY OF CONTINENTS 1. Stories from MEDIEVAL ASIA (2/3) PROPHET MOHAMMAD AND BIRTH OF ISLAM Muhammad ( 570 CE – 8 June 632 CE) was an Arab religious, social, and political leader and the founder of Islam. Muhammad united Arabia into a single Muslim polity, with the Quran as well as his teachings and practices forming the basis of Islamic religious belief In his later years, he used to seclude himself in a mountain cave named Hira for several nights of prayer, When he was 40, Muhammad reported being visited by Gabriel in the cave and receiving his first revelation from God. Three years later in 610 Muhammad started preaching these revelations publicly proclaiming that "God is One", that complete submission to God is the right way of life and that he was a prophet and messenger of God. These revealtions later gave birth to Quran. The followers of Muhammad were initially few in number but since In the 6th century, the Middle East was separated into small, weak states and the Byzantines and Sassanians fought with each other continually, a reflection of the rivalry between the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire seen during the previous five hundred years thus leaving the stage open to a new power. In 615 He sent some of his followers to Abyssinia to shield them from prosecution, before he and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 In Medina he united the local tribes and in December 629, after eight years of intermittent fighting with Meccan tribes, Muhammad gathered an army of 10,000 Muslim converts and marched on the city of Mecca. The conquest went largely uncontested and Muhammad seized the city with little bloodshed In 632, a few months after returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, he fell ill and died. By the time of his death, most of the Arabian Peninsula had converted to Islam. • • • • • • • #historyofasia #history #arabia #arabianpeninsula #historyofarabia #byzantineempire #sassanianempire #holyromanempire #islam #prophetmohammad #persia #islamichistory #islamiccaliphate #warhistory #historyofwar #crusades #crusadesmeme #historyblog #historyreading #ageofdiscovery #historyknowledge #historylovers #historyfacts #blog #historyblogger

#tbt to Istanbul, inside of the Hagia Sophia, one of the oldest Christian Cathedrals in the world. In 537 AD, this was the largest building in the world. It stayed the largest cathedral in the world for a THOUSAND YEARS.⁣ ⁣ It might seem strange to you that one of the oldest and largest cathedrals in the world should be in a predominantly Muslim country.⁣ ⁣ But remember— Istanbul used to be known as Constantinople, the center of the Eastern Roman Empire. The city was named after Emperor Constantine, the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. His conversion was one of the driving forces behind the spread of early Christianity.⁣ ⁣ You’ll notice Arabic calligraphy in these photos — in 1453, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and converted the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. It stayed that way for almost 500 years, until it was changed to a museum.⁣ ⁣ Today, it’s one of the few places on the planet with world class Muslim and Christian history and art under the same roof. There’s nowhere else like it.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #travel #history #byzantineempire #byzantine #coolhistory⁣

Justinian I and Theodora. When Justinian sought to marry Theodora, he could not: he was the designated heir of his uncle, EmperorJustin I, and a Roman law from Constantine's time prevented anyone of senatorial rank from marrying actresses. In 525, Justin repealed the law, and Justinian married Theodora. At this point, she already had a daughter (whose name has been lost). Justinian apparently treated the daughter and the daughter's son Athanasius as fully legitimate, although sources disagree whether Justinian was the girl's father. Depiction of Justinian from a contemporary portrait mosaic in the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna. When Justinian succeeded to the throne in 527, two years after the marriage, Theodora became empress of the Eastern Roman Empire. She shared in his plans and political strategies, participated in state councils, and Justinian called her his "partner in my deliberations." She had her own court, her own official entourage, and her own imperial seal. She was the first Eastern Roman empress consort to have coinage struck in her name. She was often present when the Emperor held court, and even held court independently when the Emperor was unwell. She was given charge of his imperial seal, implying that her perusal and consent were necessary before any document or order received legal validity. . I do not own anything! Expertly crafted with fine attention to detail and an elegant design, this immaculate sword is a fitting representation of King Arthurs legendary sword! Perfect for collectors and medieval enthusiasts alike, the 23 inch blade of the sword is stainless steel and comes unsharpened with a Celtic pattern running along the ricasso into the ridge. The guard of the sword features an intricate design with vines and dragons while the pommel also shows a dragon in the center and scroll work around the rim bearing the inscription Excalibur King Arthur. This inscription also appears on the leather wrapped wood scabbards locket, encircling a beautifully engraved image of a young King Arthur pulling the sword from the stone as mystic serpents look on. The scabbards chafe features an ornate design highlighted by a shield bearing a coat of arms featuring a cross and several classic English symbols including the famous three lions and the Tower of London. #swordinthestone #swords #movieswords #medievaltimes #byzantineempire #swordcollection #sword #swordsman #Hustledelphia #hustledelphiaonlinemall #Hustledelphiamall #safereadysurvival

Antipatrea(Αντιπατρεια)/Berat The city was founded in 314 BC by Cassander in the region of the dassaretae tribe (chaonian). The city was sacked in 200 BC by the roman general Lucius Apustius, who massacred all the male inhabitants. In the east roman era, the area around the city was subject to slavic invasions. In the 9th century, the city was captured by the bulgarians under Presian I and named it Belgrad (Βελλεγραδα), the white city. In 1272, Michael Palaiologos sent a letter to the albanian leaders of the city, where he tells them to abandon the alliance with Charles I of Naples. Yet, the albanians were loyal to him and handed him the letter. In 1274, the east romans recaptured the city and repelled a siege by the sicilians, six years later. In 1345, it came under the control of the serbian empire, then to the bulgarian noble Alexander Kommenos Asen. When the albanian Muzaka family took control in 1396, it became the principality of Berat, an ottoman vassal. Finally in 1417, the city was incorporated into the ottoman empire.

🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾⁣ 🍃⁣ TO BUY👉Link on bio⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #crusade #crusader #crusaders #crusadeon #crusaderpride #norsepagan #norsetattoo #scandinavia #vikingpride #medievalknight #medievalwarrior #greekmyth #greekgod #medieval_world #medievalrealm #vikingwarrior #medievalarmor #philosophyquote #amwritinghistoricalfiction #amwritingdarkfantasy #philosophyquote #crusadercastle #medievaltimesdallas #medievalphilosophy #byzantineempire #byzantinecatholic #romanarmy #booktrailer

#GlowingCheeksInIstanbul

Apr 27, 2020

⠀ #GlowingCheeksInIstanbul

Apr 21, 2020

⠀ #GlowingCheeksInIstanbul

#GlowingCheeksInIstanbul

Apr 19, 2020

⠀ #GlowingCheeksInIstanbul

Apr 18, 2020

⠀ #GlowingCheeksInIstanbul
