May 19, 2019

Theodora was born c. 500, in Cyprus, as a daughter of a bear-keeper, Acacius, and an unknown mother. Since young, she began to work serving tables of a brothel, passing, later, to the stage to enact sexual plays. From the age of 16 to 20, Theodora traveled to North Africa with officers, working as an actress and dancer, and converting to Miaphysitism during her stay in Alexandria. Upon returning home, she dropped her old life and moved to Constantinople. In 522, she reached the capital of the Byzantine Empire, establishing near the royal palace as a wool spinner. There, Theodora met Justiniano, nephew and heir of Emperor Justin I. Although the two were in love, a law prevented them from getting married. The law was abolished in 525 and Justinian and Theodora were married when she already had a daughter (who is not known to be his). Justinian I ascended the throne in 527, after the death of his uncle, making Theodora his Empress; she was not the consort, but his co-ruler, titled Augusta and, thus, Theodora I. At the beginning of their reign, the couple would face problems, with Nika's Revolts of 532, caused by the people's dissatisfaction with taxes and misery. Part of the royal guard was killed by the revolutionaries, and the city was taken. Justinian thought to flee, but Theodora persuaded him to massacre the movement; this massacre, of about 35000 people, was under the charge of General Belisarius, faithful to the Emperor. From then on, Justinian could, finely, reign like an autocrat, having Theodora as his right arm. As Constantinople had been seized, the couple began its reconstruction, replete with new churches like Hagia Sophia. While Justinian sought to expand the frontiers of the Empire, Theodora sought to secure rights for unfortunate women, just as she had once been. Religiously, she attempted to bring together Miaphisite and Chalcedon Christians, without success; unlike his wife, the Emperor was a Chalcedonian, and religion was one of the few matters they disagreed with. Theodora I died on June 28, 548, probably of cancer, and was buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles. Justinian I the Great refused to marry again and tried to keep her legacy.

The Asenevtsi monument is dedicated to the brothers Asen, Petar, Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II. It was built in 1985 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the uprising of Asen and Petar, which led to the liberation of Bulgaria from the Byzantine Empire. The sword located in the middle is a symbol of the power and prosperity of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom 🇧🇬The Asenevtsi ruled the medieval Bulgarian state, called in modern historiography the Second Bulgarian Empire*, between 1187 and 1280. Early rulers from the Asen dynasty (particularly Kaloyan) referred to themselves as “Emperors of Bulgarians and Vlachs”. Later rulers, especially the successful Ivan Asen II, styled themselves “Tsars (Emperors) of Bulgarians and Greeks”. -- -Паметникът „Асеневци“ (известен още като „Конниците“) е монументален паметник във Велико Търново, посветен на българските царе Асен, Петър, Калоян и Иван Асен II. Ortahisar Fatih Mosque is originally a church which was first built in the 10th century over the ruins of an ancient Roman temple but present building was built in the 12th century and named as Panaghia Chrysocephalos that's an epithet of Virgin Mary, meaning Golden Headed Virgin Mary. It's also known as "the Cathedral of the Komnenos Dynasty", the rulers of the Trebziond Greek Empire between 1204-1461, the dynasty used the churc as coronation and burial place. After the conquest of Trabzon by the Turks in 1461 the structure was transformed into a mosque by Mehmet ll the Conquerer and the structure name was changed as Fatih that means the Conquerer. The mosque is still one of the most important mosques in Trabzon and it's believed that Mehmet the Conquerer performed his first prayer at this structure in the city. Fatih Mosque is located Ortahisar district of Trabzon in the city centre. #Turkey #ByzantineEmpire #Trabzon #Greeks #TrebizondGreekEmpire #FatihSultanMehmet #MehmettheConqueror #PanaghiaChrysocephalos #VirginMary #JesusChrist #VisitTurkey #GoldenHeadedMarry #KomnenosDynasty #History #Islam #Christianity #Culture #OttomanEmpire

Saint George is one of the most popular and numerously depicted military saints in Byzantine art. For this reason, George is represented through many iconographical types. One of these types is of the standing warrior saint, as pictured above. Hagia Sofia is easily one of the most beautiful and historically interesting buildings I have ever visited. Built over 1400 years ago in 537 AD in the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constatinople, the Eastern half of the Roman Empire. It has been a Byzantine Christian Cathedral, Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Roman Catholic Cathedral and converted into an Ottoman Mosque in 1453 when the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople and renamed the city Istanbul. Now it is used as a museum where you can see Christian and Islamic art side by side since the uncovering of Christian mosaics that were plastered over during the Ottoman Empire.

May 16, 2019

#storia #storiamedievale #medioevo #crociata #costantinopoli #crociate #quartacrociata #baldovino #imperobizantino #venezia #imperolatino #history #medievalhistory #middleage #crusaders #fourthcrusade #venice #latinempire #byzantineempire #baldwin #16maggio #may16 #accaddeoggi #onthisdayinhistory

May 15, 2019

The War Against Leo And Damianos ➖ From the late 9th to the late 10th centuries AD, the eastern Roman Empire (Often referred to by modern researchers as the "Byzantine" Empire) was often engaged in heavy naval warfare with surrounding Muslim states in the eastern Mediterranean, with fluctuating fortunes on both sides. In 898 AD however, a Roman fleet, probably the Kibyrrhaiotai, was defeated by a Tarsiote Muslim fleet, in which numerous Imperial ships were captured and 3,000 prisoners beheaded. This disaster paved the way for future Muslim attacks, this time lead by a pair of Roman deserters. --- Leo of Tripoli was a former seaman in the Kibyrrhaiotai who had converted to Islam and was now leading Muslim warships on piratical expeditions into the Aegean from Tripoli. In 904 AD Leo launched a devastating raid into Greece, then the heartland of the Roman Empire, where he sacked Abydos and Thessalonika. At Thessalonika, Leo's raid killed 5,000 people, and he captured several-thousand others along with 60 ships. There was enough wealth gained from plunder to award everyone in Leo's navy with 1,000 gold Dinars. Leo also liberated 4,000 Muslims held captive in the empire. --- In an effort to deter future raids, emperor Leo VI sent a fleet under the Patrician Himerios to attack the Levant. In response the Emir of Tarsos, another convert called Damianos, raided Cyprus for four months due to assistance it had given the Romans. In 912 AD, Himerios lead his fleet to Crete but was unable to make any progress, and he was disastrously defeated by the combined fleets of Leo and Damianos. It took some time for the Romans to recover fully from these losses, however when they did, Leo was decisively defeated at Lemnos in 923 AD, and he then vanishes from history. In 924 AD Damianos died unsuccessfully besieging the Kibyrrhaiotai's fortress at Strobilos. --- #Rome #RomanEmpire #SPQR #Byzantium #ByzantineEmpire #EasternRomanEmpire #RomanNavy #ByzantineNavy #History #RomanHistory #ByzantineHistory #MedievalHistory #MilitaryHistory

May 11, 2019

After achieving the unification of the Roman Empire in 324, Constantine the Great strategically decided to found its new capital in the ancient Greek city of Byzantium. Having been rebuilt in Roman urban pattern in the 3rd century under the rule of emperor Septimius Severus and Caracalla, and its important location with trade and the frontiers of the Empire, “Constantinopolis” was destined to become the “Nova Roma”. After 6 years of construction, the new capital was finally consecrated on May 11, 330, and would remain as the religious, political and cultural center of the Byzantine Empire until the 15th century. #art #arthistory #historyofart #kunst #kunstgeschichte #sanat #sanattarihi #mozaiksanatı #mozaik #mosaic #mosaicart #sanvitale #ravenna #basilicadisanvitale #byzantineart #byzantinemosaics #easternromanempire #byzantineempire #justinian #genesis #christianart #sacrificeofisaac #hospitalityofabraham #sarah #eucharist #italy #italia #italya
